About the event
"The Hotelkeeper’s Daughter"
The book is set in Brooklyn, New York, in 1938.
We come to know life through the eyes of Gilda (our author), from the ages of 7 to 19 years.
We ‘meet’ Gilda’s family members and the joys, trials and tribulations that beset her and her Jewish East European immigrant family.
From warm, family gatherings to a lonelier existence as her father rents a hotel that tears her away from her extended family and community.
Through Gilda eyes, we experience the Great Depression, World War II and a strained relationship with her mother.
Gloria says of her motivation to write the book:
‘“To the Lennys [future generations] of today and the Idas [grandparents] of yesterday,
I want to affirm their vision, their energy, and their inspiring dedication to build a fairer, more just and loving society.”
