It is with great sadness that we share the passing of long-time Burquest Jewish Community member, Fanya Khavkin, who died peacefully in her sleep on December 17, 2025. Her unexpected passing came as a shock to family and friends, yet there is comfort in knowing that she left this world gently.

Many felt that this peaceful departure was a blessing—a reflection of the kindness, generosity, and love she so freely gave to others throughout her life.

At her 90th birthday celebration, Fanya once joked that she needed at least 15 more years so she could wear all her beautiful clothes, jewelry, and shoes. A true fashionista, she had her own unmistakable style, elegance, and grace. Even in her 90s, she radiated vitality and charm, often appearing decades younger than her years.

Fanya’s talents were many. She designed and tailored her own outfits, had a deep love for classical music, theatre, and cinema, and was known for her remarkable culinary skills. Her friendships spanned decades and were rooted in loyalty and care. A devoted community volunteer, Fanya generously gave her time—driving elderly friends to appointments, visiting them in hospital, and offering help whenever it was needed. Above all, she was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She rarely missed a seniors’ event in the community and was always full of life and positive energy. A Holocaust survivor, Fanya grew up in Belarus and immigrated to Canada 48 years ago. After years of hard work in Winnipeg, she opened her own clothing alteration business, embracing each new opportunity with determination and optimism. She often said, “It’s a mitzvah, and it all comes back to us.”

Fanya was immensely proud of her sons, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren, joyfully sharing their photos and videos with friends. Her warmth, generosity, and spirit left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Fanya was truly a shining light in the lives of all who knew her. Her passing leaves a deep void in the hearts of her family, friends, and the many people whose lives she touched. She will be remembered not for how her life ended, but for how beautifully it was lived.
