They are still in love...

I’ve known Gideon and Renate Stuhler for many years, and I often find myself wondering how they’ve built a marriage so grounded in openness, closeness, and genuine support for one another. What are the secrets behind their long-lasting partnership?

It’s clear that a strong marriage takes more than love, attraction, or shared hobbies. Perfection isn’t realistic—but the Stuhlers show that a meaningful, enduring relationship is possible when both partners bring compromise, emotional honesty, trust, and respect to the table. Whether they’re attending Shabbat services, exercising together, ballroom dancing, or exploring new places overseas, they embrace each moment as a team.

Another remarkable part of their story is their long-time dedication to the Burquest Jewish community. Over the years, Gideon has served as a board member, treasurer, donor, and dependable volunteer in countless ways. I remember a time when a small group of us visited a seriously ill community member to help clean his home—Gideon immediately stepped in to take on the toughest tasks without hesitation. During fundraising events like the Burquest garage sale, Renate and Gideon spent days preparing and donating items, giving their time wholeheartedly.

Following the tragic events of October 7, Gideon and Renate consistently attended community demonstrations in Vancouver organized by the Jewish Federation, standing in support of Israel. Throughout this time, Gideon has also written regularly to MPs and government officials, voicing his concerns about rising antisemitism and urging stronger protections for Jewish communities. Together, they continue to offer financial support to the IDF and to those defending Israel—something deeply meaningful to Gideon given his own connection to military service.

Perhaps it’s this unwavering sense of responsibility—their commitment to doing what they believe is right, their mitzvot, and their dedication to community—that has helped sustain Gideon and Renate through 40 years of marriage. Whatever the secret may be, their partnership is a beautiful example of love in action.
